Discovery Trip To Kenya

It’s a  magical experience being transported from the comfort of our homes and everything familiar to a new country with a totally different culture, climate and landscape.  

Waking up in the morning we see elephants and zebras, giraffes and warthogs, drinking from the water hole outside our bedroom windows. We see a herd of elephants with their young or a cheetah leisurely walking beside us as we travel in a Landcruiser through a safari park to volunteer in the local community project. 

We work alongside the locals to help build or paint a classroom, make bricks from earth to build a poultry house or construct a masonry tank to store water. We visit a local rainwater catchment where women and children fetch water shared with wild animals, fill our yellow jerry cans from the catchment and begin the long trek back to the Global Angels organic farm. We support each other as the jerry cans feel heavier and heavier and we empty water on the ground or share it with farmers as we pass their houses. We begin to experience what it might be like for the women and children doing this every day for survival and we are amazed at their endurance.

Travelling home in the late afternoon we are physically exhausted from working in the heat, our minds in turmoil as we grapple with the inequality of lifestyles between the West and here.

We arrive back to the lodge for a delicious hot dinner and drinks, seated beside the water hole where we see a vast herd of buffalo arrive to quench their thirst. To top it off, once it’s dark the lions begin to roar and they appear around the edges of the water hole hoping to capture newborn calves for dinner.

The group meets together each evening to share their thoughts and feelings and their experiences of the day. This coaching time becomes a highlight as the group bonds. Each evening we see our relationships deepen and our team spirit grows.  

On our last day, we climb the hills overlooking the valley. We take time to reflect on what we will take back with us, what we’ve learned.

We’ve seen up close the effects of climate change, deforestation, soil degeneration. We’ve also learned more about sustainability, organic farming and circular economies, of empowering the local community with the tools thrive.

We’ve made new friends for life. We plan to meet up again and to come back to Tsavo. We’ve understood more about ourselves and team building.

We are more aware of our purpose in life. We’ve caught a vision of being changemakers in our workplace and in the wider world.
